JOURNALISM LECTURES WEEK 6- COMMERCIAL MEDIA

COMMERCIAL MEDIA

Commercial media is a type of media where the companies are set up but with main drive of earning profits.
In this lecture we looked at some major commercial companies in Australia eg. News Limited, Fair fax media, Nine media, Ten, Seven West Media and many others.
All these companies produce newspapers, digital media,  radio and outdoor advertising.
There are forms and functions of commercial media such as:
FORMS
Subscription - Foxtel company
Sponsored - Nine Corporation
Subsidized meaning the government is involved.

FUNCTION
Commercial
Propaganda
Social

There are social responsibilities of media these are;
1. Truthfulness
2. Forum for exchange of comments and criticism
3. Projection of representative pictures
4. Presentation and clarification of goals and values in society
5. Full access to the day intelligence.

Ways to keep the media houses under control?
1. Formal state requirement
2. Legal prescription
3. State oversight
4. Statutory
5. Voluntary
There was also a look at the challenges facing commercial media and the key was lack of resources.
It was quite an interesting topic to focus on.
