JOURNALISM LECTURES WEEK 6- COMMERCIAL MEDIA

COMMERCIAL MEDIA

Commercial media is a type of media where the companies are set up but with main drive of earning profits.
In this lecture we looked at some major commercial companies in Australia eg. News Limited, Fair fax media, Nine media, Ten, Seven West Media and many others.
All these companies produce newspapers, digital media,  radio and outdoor advertising.
There are forms and functions of commercial media such as:
FORMS
Subscription - Foxtel company
Sponsored - Nine Corporation
Subsidized meaning the government is involved.

FUNCTION
Commercial
Propaganda
Social

There are social responsibilities of media these are;
1. Truthfulness
2. Forum for exchange of comments and criticism
3. Projection of representative pictures
4. Presentation and clarification of goals and values in society
5. Full access to the day intelligence.

Ways to keep the media houses under control?
1. Formal state requirement
2. Legal prescription
3. State oversight
4. Statutory
5. Voluntary
There was also a look at the challenges facing commercial media and the key was lack of resources.
It was quite an interesting topic to focus on.

JOURNALISM LECTURE 5 - PICTURE STORIES

PICTURE STORIES
 There was no lecture and tutorial in the previous week due to the Ekka Festivals. I  did not attend the festivals and my friends made me jealous by telling me their stories and the fun they had but I enjoyed my bed.
In this weeks lecture the topic was PICTURE STORIES.
It started with a question of is it  true a picture is worth 1000words??
I agree that a picture is worth 1000words because truth is through an image we are able to tell the emotions of the person in the picture, the venue and the mood of the background.
The lecture taught us that pictures are all over I mean everywhere we are we are surrounded by images especially through the websites and now there are many creations of apps with picture related things.
In history there was also use of pictures although not digital as many cultures would draw whatever they felt and most images had deeper meanings until now.
In the religious institutions we see images in Holy books and also in the cathedral glasses.
In the early newspapers there were also pictures which were in the line drawing format. The first published photo was in 1880 it was unclear. In 1936 The Scottish Daily Record and Mail published the first newspaper with a colored photograph.
INTERESTING NEWS the 1st published pictures on the internet were published in the year 1992 yeah same year I was born. THINK ABOUT NOW WE HAVE INSTAGRAM!! :-)
JUST A FEW FACTS
14 million –Number of Instagram accounts created.
• 60 –Average number of photos uploaded per second to Instagram.
• 100 billion –Estimated number of photos on Facebook by mid-2011.
• 51 million –Total registered users on Flickr.
• 4.5 million –Photos uploaded to Flickr daily.
• 6 billion –Photos hosted on Flickr(August 2011).
• Apple iPhone4 is the most popular camera on Flickr.

That was quite interesting right?
The 1st video uploaded on YouTube was in  23rd April 2005  and ever since 72hrs of video is uploaded on YouTube per minute.
Complications are Digital manipulations eg. Too much Photoshop creating a poor mentality to the public.
Digital Publishing is a concern too as companies find it cheaper to advertise on their own than use digital companies.

JOURNALISM LECTURE 3 - TEXT

    TOPIC : TEXT
  Personally this topic was not catchy for me as the presentation was plain so until now am still struggling to understand it but am catching up.
The lecture was on Text and the formats used when publishing news and also the importance of using good text and the use of text.
In the lecture we looked at a few images of poorly written newspapers and the have informative information but the way the information is written is not catchy hence many people will opt not to purchase the newspaper because it cannot be read easily and has not attracted them. 
We also looked at the pyramid of writing information and also the different formats of writing examples are comparisons between 1. Main Print Stories
                                   2.  Web Print Stories
                                   3. Evening Print Stories
I learnt that text is also Facebook updates, Forums, tweets, emails,blogs and comments. All these types of text have a different approach of writing.
As a future journalist this lecture helped me know the kind of text to use and the approaches needed for different types of texts so as to attract my audience or customers.


 

JOURNALISM LECTURE 2

NEW NEWS 

This lecture was interesting as we looked at the developments in news writing and we viewed the differences. Men the old was too old compared to the new journalism way of writing news.

In the new era we are using the world web to access information and journalists are using media sites eg. Twitter, news engines, Facebook and so much more. Compare with the old generation that had to use radio, television or newspapers to access the news.

The importance of this new generation of news generation is  that its faster and people are able to air their views on the news rather than the past where we had to take the published news as bible truth. 

There is also the semantic web here we looked at how the use of mobile phones and other gadgets has affected the production of news via newspapers. There is also a change in the advertisement methods used hence more people are lured to purchase things they may not even need.

My view is that I prefer the new news era but I believe there has been a decrease in generation of important news as compared to the past/ old generation.

 With the introduction of eBay as a site engine for people to access all they need this has killed the use of classifieds where everybody used them to find information that they required eg. looking for a house, jobs and stores for clothes etc.

The new era has made many people especially old journalists to lose their jobs as now one can publish news when still in their beds and also media companies are seeking the young and fresh youth.

JOURNALISM LECTURE 1

This was the 1st lecture and all we did was introduction and knowing the course requirements, the lecturer and the tutors. It was fun both my lecturer and tutors are fun and my class is nothing but awesome and helpful :-)
I got lost trying to find the lecture rooms and basically the whole school not fun at all.
